Nineteen states, half the business in two
Hanover traces its roots to The Hanover Fire Insurance Company, founded in 1852; the current holding company was organized in Delaware in 1995. It is licensed for property and casualty insurance in all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico, but actively markets Personal Lines policies in only 19 states. About half of its Personal Lines net premiums come from Michigan and Massachusetts combined. Michigan alone produces about 35 percent of Hanover's homeowners net premiums, and Hanover writes about 6 percent of Michigan's total personal lines market by 2025 direct premiums. Massachusetts accounts for about 10 percent of its homeowners premiums.
Hanover sells through select independent agents and focuses on account business, meaning households that place both auto and home with it. About 89 percent of its personal lines policies in force are account business.
What the Homeowners and Other line covers
The filing describes the line as covering residences and personal property against fire, wind, hail, water damage excluding flood, theft and vandalism, and third-party liability claims at the residence. The same line includes personal umbrella, inland marine for items such as jewelry and art, fire, personal watercraft and personal cyber coverage. Hanover says it manages catastrophe risk partly through deductibles and specific restrictions on flood and earthquake coverage, and that homeowners property and commercial multiple peril coverages have generated most of its catastrophe claims.
Results and pricing, 2023 to 2025
The line's loss and loss adjustment expense ratio, including prior-year development, was 106.1 percent in 2023, when catastrophes alone added 46.1 points. It improved to 76.8 percent in 2024, with 23.7 catastrophe points, and to 55.6 percent in 2025, with 10.7 points. Net premiums written in the line grew from $1.01 billion in 2023 to $1.05 billion in 2024 and $1.12 billion in 2025.
Hanover reports homeowners pricing increases of about 14 percent in 2025, against 9 percent in personal auto, and expects further increases, though moderating. It also says personal lines policies in force declined in 2025, as it had expected, because earlier margin recapture actions left fewer policies available to renew.
