Who Chubb's homeowners policies are for
Chubb Personal Risk Services (PRS) sells in the U.S. and Canada. Alongside homeowners it offers high-value and collector car insurance, valuable articles including fine art, personal and excess liability, travel, cyber and recreational marine cover. Homeowners, including valuable articles, made up 69 percent of the North America Personal segment's net premiums earned in 2025. Policies are written on both an admitted and an excess and surplus lines basis, through independent regional agents and brokers and through digital partnerships.
Chubb says it competes by addressing the specific needs of high-net-worth households and by service, not as a mass-market carrier. For a buyer, a Chubb quote and a standard-market quote are only comparable when the limits, deductibles and settlement terms match line by line.
Size and growth
Across Chubb worldwide, personal homeowners net premiums written were $5.31 billion in 2025, up 6.7 percent. In North America the personal segment wrote $7.02 billion of net premiums, up 7.5 percent, which Chubb attributes to strong new business, retention, and positive rate and exposure increases across most lines. North America personal homeowners premiums earned rose from $3.83 billion in 2023 to $4.29 billion in 2024 and $4.65 billion in 2025.
The 2025 California wildfires
Chubb reports $1.47 billion of California wildfire losses in 2025. In the North America personal segment, net catastrophe losses jumped to $1.72 billion from $622 million, and catastrophes added 25.2 points to the combined ratio, which rose to 91.5 percent from 83.6 percent. The segment also paid $50 million of reinsurance reinstatement premiums tied to the fires. Excluding catastrophes and prior-year development, its current accident year combined ratio improved to 72.3 percent from 78.5 percent, which Chubb credits partly to higher homeowners rates and lower underlying losses. Prior-year development was favorable in 2025 and 2024, mostly in homeowners lines.
For its global property catastrophe reinsurance program, renewed for April 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026, Chubb retains the first $1.75 billion of U.S. losses per occurrence (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) before the reinsurance layers begin.
