COMPANY PROFILE

Erie Insurance: homeowners insurance profile

Erie Insurance is not a typical stock or mutual insurer. Its homeowners policies are written by the Erie Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal insurer whose policyholders are called subscribers, and run by a separate public company, Erie Indemnity, under a power of attorney each policyholder signs. Erie Indemnity's Form 10-K filed February 23, 2026 explains that structure and reports the Exchange's 2025 premiums. This profile summarizes it next to the coverage Erie lists on its site. It does not rate or recommend the company.

How the reciprocal structure works

Both Erie Indemnity, a Pennsylvania corporation, and the Erie Insurance Exchange, a Pennsylvania-domiciled reciprocal insurer, began in 1925. The Exchange has no employees or officers. Each policyholder signs a subscriber's agreement, a limited power of attorney, appointing Erie Indemnity as attorney-in-fact to issue and renew policies, handle claims and manage investments. The Exchange's insurance subsidiaries include Erie Insurance Company, Erie Insurance Company of New York, Erie Insurance Property & Casualty Company and Flagship City Insurance Company.

For those policy issuance and renewal services, Erie Indemnity keeps a management fee set at least annually by its board and capped at 25 percent of the premiums the Exchange writes; the rate was 25 percent in both 2024 and 2025. Claims handling and investment services are reimbursed at cost. If a policy is canceled mid-term and unearned premium is refunded, the related management fee goes back to the Exchange. For a homeowner, the practical point is that your policy, its claims handling and your premium all run through this attorney-in-fact arrangement rather than a conventional insurance company staff.

Sold only through independent agents

Independent agencies are the Exchange's sole distribution channel, and they also act as underwriting and service providers. Agent compensation made up about 71 percent of Erie Indemnity's 2025 policy issuance and renewal costs. Erie does not sell homeowners policies directly to consumers, so a quote comes through a local appointed agent.

Personal lines premiums in 2025

Personal lines, led by private passenger auto and homeowners, made up 71 percent of the Exchange's 2025 direct and affiliated assumed written premiums. Personal lines premiums written rose 8.3 percent to $9.2 billion, driven by a 9.4 percent rise in average premium per policy, while personal lines policies in force fell 1.5 percent. Across all lines, new business premiums dropped 17.8 percent as new policies written fell 22.8 percent, and the filing notes that retention declined slightly because of competition.

The 10-K says the Exchange raised rates from 2022 through 2024 mainly to keep up with inflation-driven claim severity, and implemented more moderate increases in 2025. Because it writes almost all policies on annual terms, a rate change takes about 12 months to reach every policyholder.
